KING AND SCHROEDER LEAD PIONEERS TO WIN OVER CAMERON

LAWTON, Oklahoma (September 15)Junior outside hitter Katie King totaled 18 kills and junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder collected 16 kills to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a four-game victory over the Cameron University Aggies on Saturday afternoon in Lawton, Oklahoma.

The dominant combined effort from King and Schroeder (pictured) helped the Pioneers bounce back from a narrow loss in the first game of the match and earn their first Lone Star Conference win of the season, 28-30, 30-25, 30-27, 30-22.

“We were facing a little bit of adversity after we dropped the first game,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “But, as good teams do, we rose to the challenge. This win proves that this team is maturing and heading in the right direction.”

The key to victory for the Pioneers was offensive efficiency. As a team, TWU hit a stellar .278 attack percentage for the match. Schroeder led the way with a .467 while King hit a .289. Senior outside hitter Kasye Richmond did her part by delivering seven kills on 15 swings (.400) while junior right side hitter Sharon Schaffner converted ten of her 30 attack opportunities (.200).

Barberee said her team’s offensive potency was critical.

“When we had chances to put the ball away, we did that. We stressed in practice this week that we had to make the most of our attack opportunities if we wanted to win. Our players really focused on that and we came away with a positive result,” she explained.

Sophomore setter Jessica Crow (54 assists) and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (5 total blocks) also played well in the match for the Pioneers.

Senior outside hitter Fernanda Queiroz was the Aggies’ best player in defeat. The Brazil native, a three-time All-Lone Star Conference selection, pounded down 23 kills on a match-high 62 attacks for the home team. She also registered one service ace and 13 digs.

The road win helped the Pioneers earn a measure of revenge against the Aggies. Cameron defeated TWU three times in 2006, including a three-game sweep over the Pioneers in the semifinals of the 2006 Lone Star Conference volleyball tournament.

“Mentally this was a big hurdle for our team to get a win against Cameron,” said Barberee. “They had our number last season, so it feels really good to come up here and leave with a victory.”

Now 7-7 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, the Pioneers will get some much needed time off before their next match. TWU will not return to the court until Saturday, September 22, when they meet Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
