TWU HIRES CARLEY MESSMER AS ASSISTANT VOLLEYBALL COACH
 DENTON, Texas (August 7) – Texas Woman’s University Director of Athletics Chalese Connors has announced the hiring of Carley Messmer as the Pioneers’ assistant volleyball coach.
Messmer is returning to a familiar location to begin her collegiate coaching career. She played for TWU for three years from 2003-06, and was the Pioneers’ number one setter and team captain. In 2003, after transferring to TWU from the University of Texas-San Antonio, she led the Pioneers with 1,023 assists and was an honorable mention selection to the Lone Star Conference North Division All-Conference squad. In 2004, she totaled a team-high 943 assists and set a TWU single-season record with 206 kills by a setter. For her efforts during her junior season, she was chosen to the LSC North Division All-Conference first team. In her senior season of 2005, Messmer played in all but one of the Pioneers’ games and totaled 1,351 assists, 145 kills, and 322 digs. She was again chosen for the LSC North Division All-Conference First Team. Additionally, she was selected to the 2005 LSC Volleyball Tournament All-Tournament Team.
Messmer, a native of Garland, Texas, also excelled in the classroom. She was named to the LSC North Division All-Academic Team on two occasions (2004 and 2005) and chosen for the LSC North Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2003. Messmer graduated from TWU in May 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics.
She served as a head coach in the Denton Juniors Volleyball Club in 2003-04.
TWU head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee, who coached Messmer during her stint in a Pioneer uniform, is looking forward to having her former player join her on the sideline.
“Carley was a coach on the floor during her three years on the court here at TWU. Because of her familiarity with my coaching style and my program as a whole, I expect her to have a very positive impact on our team,” explained Barberee.
Messmer, who began her TWU coaching duties on Monday, is thrilled to once again be a part of the TWU Athletics family.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for me,” she explained. “I’m excited to have the chance to work with Coach Barberee and such a talented group of volleyball student-athletes.” |
