PIONEERS WIN ONE, LOSE ONE ON FIRST DAY OF TOURNAMENT
DENTON, Texas (August 31) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers volleyball team split a pair of matches on the first day of the six-team TWU Tournament being played at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
In their first match of the day, the Pioneers swept past Southwest Baptist University, 30-24, 30-28, 30-24. A balanced offensive effort was the key to victory for TWU as three players – junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder, senior outside hitter Kasye Richmond (pictured), and junior outside hitter Katie King – totaled 9 kills. Senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus (12 assists/24 digs) and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (2 service aces/5 total blocks) also stood out in the win for the Pioneers.
In their second match, TWU suffered a tough defeat to Harding University, falling in four games to the Lady Bisons, 26-30, 30-22, 30-17, 30-17. Sophomore outside hitter Manuela Nesheva was the catalyst in the win for Harding as she piled up 17 kills, 4 service aces, and 22 digs. King (12 kills) and Traylor (10 kills) played well in the loss for TWU. Marcus shined again, totaling 19 digs. Additionally, sophomore Jessica Crow stepped up for TWU, tossing up 36 assists.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee said it was an up-and-down day for her young team.
“I was pleased to get the win against Southwest Baptist. They played us very tough, but I felt that our defense stepped up and got us over the hump in that one,” she explained. “Harding was a different type of team. We haven’t seen a club like that yet this season. I thought we kind of let up a little bit after we won that first game. They beat us mentally, then we broke down physically, and they got in our heads. We are a much better ball club than we showed in that loss.”
The Pioneers (3-3) play two matches on the second and final day of their tournament on Saturday, September 1. TWU will take on the University of Texas-Permian Basin at 10:00 a.m. and then square off against Missouri Southern State University at 1:30 p.m.
