TWU SPLITS TWO MATCHES ON FINAL DAY OF TOURNAMENT
HILO, Hawaii (August 26) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers volleyball team split a pair of matches late Saturday night on the final day of the Hawaiian Style Classic tournament being played in Hilo, Hawaii.
In their first match Saturday, TWU was defeated by Hawaii-Hilo 3 games to 1 (30-21, 30-26, 28-30, 30-15). Junior outside hitter Katie King (pictured) was a bright spot in the loss for TWU as she recorded a team-high 14 kills. Three TWU players - senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus (14), junior right side hitter Sharon Schaffner (12), and senior outside hitter Kasye Richmond (10) - totaled double-digit digs in the match for the Pioneers. Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder was a force at the net with four block assists.
The Pioneers bounced back from the loss to Hilo with a strong performance against Rollins College to defeat the Tars 3 games to 1 (26-30, 30-23, 30-26, 30-25). King again led TWU with 22 kills. She received plenty of offensive support from Schaffner (10 kills) and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (12 kills). Sophomore setter Jessica Crow guided the TWU attack smoothly as she tallied a match-high 48 assists. The serve was also a catalyst for the Pioneers in the victory as the team combined for a season-high 12 service aces (Traylor had a team-best 4 aces).
TWU finished the three day tournament with a 2-2 record, a mark that pleased the Pioneers head volleyball coach, Shelly Barberee.
“With the caliber of teams in this tournament, I am very happy to come out of here with a 2-2 record. This is a good way for us to start the season, and hopefully, our success here will help us build some confidence for the rest of the year,” said Barberee.
King was chosen for the All-Tournament team for her outstanding play throughout the tournament. The MVP of the tournament was Tanya Alvino, the setter for Chaminade University.
The Pioneers will now return home to Denton, where they will next take the court on Friday, August 31, when they begin a two-day, eight-team tournament at Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall. For a complete schedule of tournament games, please log on to the Pioneers website at twuathletics.com.
