PIONEERS VICTORIOUS IN SEASON-OPENING MATCH
HILO, Hawaii (August 23) – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team opened their 2007 season with five-game victory on Thursday night as they defeated Briar Cliff University 30-21, 26-30, 32-30, 26-30, 15-11.
The game was the first of four this weekend for the Pioneers in the Hawaiian Style Classic Tournament being played in Hilo, Hawaii.
TWU head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee was satisfied with her team’s effort in their first match of the year.
“We came out strong in the first game, then we kind of lost our focus and our play leveled off. Really, it was our service errors that kept them (Briar Cliff) in the match,” said Barberee. “But, we kept fighting, our defense stepped up for us, and we did enough to win the decisive fifth game.”
Barberee credited junior outside hitter Katie King, sophomore setter Jessica Crow (pictured), and freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan for their strong play in the match.
“Jessica Crow was phenomenal. She gave our hitters good looks all night long. Katie King was very consistent offensively for us and Alyson Harlan showed that she’s ready to contribute at the collegiate level. Those three ladies were outstanding for us this evening,” she explained.
Next up for the TWU in the tropical tournament is the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The Pioneers will play the Nanooks at 9:00 p.m. CST on Friday evening, August 24. On Saturday, August 25, TWU will have two matches, first against the host team, Hawaii-Hilo at 4:00 p.m. CST and then against Rollins College at 8:30 p.m. CST. |
