PIONEERS PICKED FIFTH IN 2007 LSC VOLLEYBALL PRESEASON POLL

RICHARDSON, Texas (July 30) – West Texas A&M was the overwhelming choice to win the Lone Star Conference title, according to the 2007 LSC preseason volleyball poll announced Monday.

The league's preseason polls reflect the opinions of LSC head coaches and sports information directors, plus various media representatives from throughout the region.

The 2007 volleyball season will begin in late August, and the LSC has 13 teams set to compete. After using a North-South divisional alignment since the 1997 season, LSC teams will use a one-conference, single round-robin scheduling model in 2007.  Each team will play a total of 12 league matches, one against each of other teams in the conference.

The LSC regular season title will be determined by conference matches with the champion and runner-up receiving trophies, while the postseason tournament will be expanded to an eight-team bracket, taking the top eight teams in the final conference standings.  The tournament will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-10, using the NCAA regional format and be hosted by the No. 1 seed.

The Lady Buffs recorded an amazing 34-4 record last season including a perfect 10-0 mark in South Division play.  After cruising through the regular season, WTAMU won the LSC Postseason Tournament, Southwest Regional title and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championships.

WTAMU was the choice to capture the LSC crown on 30 of the 35 votes cast for a total of 448 points.  Abilene Christian claimed the other five first-place votes and tallied 391 points to finish second in the voting.

Central Oklahoma was picked third with 378 points, while Cameron was fourth with 318, Texas Woman’s fifth with 301, Tarleton State sixth with 288, Midwestern State seventh with 259 and Texas A&M-Commerce eighth with 186.

Southeastern Oklahoma (182), Texas A&M-Kingsville (166), Angelo State (106), Southwestern Oklahoma (94) and Eastern New Mexico (68) rounded out the poll.
