PIONEERS’ SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE WITH LOSS TO ACU
Box Score
CANYON, Texas (November 8, 2007) – The 2007 season for the Texas Woman’s University volleyball team came to an end on Thursday night as the Pioneers suffered a four-game loss - 30-21, 26-30, 30-26, 30-13 - to the Abilene Christian University Wildcats in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship.
After dropping the first game, the Pioneers fought back to win the second game and tie the match at one game apiece. In the third game, TWU raced out to a 19-13 lead and appeared to be gaining control. The Wildcats, however, responded with a 17-7 run to win the game and grab the momentum.
“That was the turning point right there,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee of the ACU surge in the third game. “At that point, we were in control, and we were poised to take charge of the match. But, we made a few mistakes and let them off the hook. Losing that lead just demoralized us and we couldn’t recover.”
Sophomore right side hitter Michelle Bacon and junior middle blocker Lauren Leone totaled 13 kills apiece to pace the Wildcats offensive attack in the win. Senior outside hitter Abbie Lowry also chipped in for ACU with 12 kills of her own.
Freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan was the Pioneers top player in the loss. Harlan had six kills, a match-high four service aces, six digs and two total blocks. Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder (eight kills, five block assists) and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (10 kills, three block assists) also played well for TWU.
The loss sets the Pioneers final season record at 15-13. Despite the defeat, and the early exit from the eight-team conference tournament, Barberee remained upbeat about her team’s performance this season.
“We had a heck of a year,” she said. “Everybody thought this was going to be a rebuilding season for us because we were so young. But we came together as a team, built some solid chemistry, and ended up surprising a lot of people. I'm extremely proud of this team and this group of girls.”
