PIONEERS MOVING ON TO 2007 LSC VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
DENTON, Texas (November 5) – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team has qualified for the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship. The eight-team postseason tournament will be played this weekend in Canyon, Texas at West Texas A&M University. WTAMU, the 2007 LSC regular season conference champion, will be the host school for the tourney.
The Pioneers, who finished the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-6 mark in LSC play, will be the fifth-seed in the tournament. They will begin the tournament on Thursday, November 8, with a 5:00 p.m. quarterfinal match versus the fourth-seeded Abilene Christian University Wildcats (14-13 overall, 8-4 LSC).
This is the fifth year in a row that TWU has advanced to the conference tournament. Ironically enough, it will also be the third year in a row that the Pioneers will play Abilene Christian in the tournament. In 2005, TWU fell to ACU in four games in the tournament semifinals. In 2006, the Pioneers earned a measure of revenge against the Wildcats by sweeping to a three-game win in the quarterfinals. TWU and ACU have already played once this season, with the Wildcats coming away with a three-game win (30-13, 30-24, 30-22) on Saturday, October 20, in Abilene.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee is excited to have her team back in the conference tournament.
“Qualifying for the conference tournament five years in a row is a significant accomplishment. That validates that our program is constantly improving and getting better year in and year out. I’m looking forward to taking my team down to Canyon this week and giving it our best shot,” she said.
All of the Pioneers’ games in the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship will be shown live via internet video streaming at LSClive.tv, conference officials announced recently. Webcasts of each game are available for only $5.50 per game or a tournament pass can be purchased for $12.99. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham has the call for all the games.
