TWU FALTERS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (November 3)The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers struggled in their 2007 regular season finale, losing on their home court in three games (31-29, 30-28, 30-26) to the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs.

The Pioneers were their own worst enemy against the Bulldogs. As a team, TWU hit just a .110 for the match. Additionally, TWU committed six service errors, three block errors, and three ball handling errors.

“We were just way too sloppy,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “The bottom line is, if we make that many mistakes, we’re not going to be able to win. We didn’t execute offensively or defensively today and that really hurt us.”

Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder, with 10 kills on 24 swings, was one of the few Pioneer players to have any offensive success in the match. Freshman LyGene’ Traylor, with seven kills and four block assists, also enjoyed a productive contest for TWU.

Senior middle blocker Kasandra Gurtner was the top individual performer in the win for SWOSU (14-19, 5-7 LSC). Gurtner played a tremendous match, totaling 16 kills, one service ace, 8 digs, and four block assists. Junior middle blocker Kacie Sandberg also contributed to the Bulldogs’ victory with 11 kills.

The loss drops the Pioneers’ overall record to 15-12 and their mark in Lone Star Conference play to 6-6. TWU, however, will continue their season next week at the 2007 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship being played in Canyon, Texas on the campus of West Texas A&M University. The Pioneers’ seeding, opponent, and game date and time for the eight-team postseason tournament will be determined following the conclusion the LSC regular season on Sunday afternoon.
