HARLAN SHINES IN PIONEERS LOSS TO UCO
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (November 1) – Despite a career-high 23 kills from freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan (pictured), the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers suffered a four-game defeat to the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos (30-23, 30-25, 25-30, 30-26) on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
The Bronchos were able to overcome Harlan’s individual brilliance thanks in large part to a balanced offensive attack. Four UCO players - sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Reynolds (21), junior outside hitter Mari Araujo (17), freshman middle blocker Jessica Legako (13), and freshman middle blocker Courtney Whitlow (23) - totaled double-digit kills in the win for UCO.
The Bronchos also took advantage of numerous errors by the Pioneers throughout the match. TWU made nine service errors, three ball handling errors, and 21 attack errors.
“Our mistakes were the difference in the match,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “We played well in spurts, but every time we would start to get a little momentum going, we would shoot ourselves in the foot with a careless error. This match was there for the taking, and we let it slip away.”
In addition to Harlan’s fine play, the Pioneers also received standout performances from freshman outside hitter Danielle Veitenheimer (13 kills, one block assist) and sophomore setter Jessica Crow (53 assists, two service aces).
Barberee specifically credited Harlan and Veitenheimer after the match was over.
“Alyson and Danielle were outstanding tonight. They both just kept banging the ball down and because of them, we had a chance to win. I’m very pleased with the improvement that they have made this season,” she said.
The defeat drops the Pioneers record to 15-11 on the year and 6-5 in the Lone Star Conference. The win was the fifth in a row for the Bronchos and raises their season record to 28-5 and their Lone Star Conference mark to 10-1.
TWU will play their 2007 regular season finale when they host the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. at Magee Arena on Saturday, November 3.
