BALANCED OFFENSIVE EFFORT LEADS TWU PAST SAU
Box Score
MAGNOLIA, Arkansas (October 5) – Four players recorded double-figure kills to help the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a five-game win (22-30, 30-23, 26-30, 30-28, 15-8) over the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders on Friday night in Magnolia, Arkansas.
Junior Katie King led the way for TWU with 17 kills on 36 swings. Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder (15 kills), freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (12 kills) and freshman outside hitter Danielle Veitenheimer (11 kills) followed King’s lead with strong efforts of their own.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee was pleased with her team’s balanced offensive play.
“That was good to see,” said Barberee. “We are a hard team to beat when we our attack comes from more than one player. Our opponents have been focusing on Katie, and that opens things up for our other players. Kandis, LyGene’ and Danielle stepped up tonight when we needed them to.”
Sophomore setter Jessica Crow (57 assists) and junior right side hitter Sharon Schaffner (four total blocks) also played well in the win for TWU.
The non-conference win by the Pioneers (11-8, 3-2 LSC) was their fourth victory in their last five matches played. The loss dropped the Muleriders season record to 6-16.
TWU will return to conference play next Thursday, October 11, when they host the LSC-leading West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. The match will be Pioneer Pride and Pizza night as all fans in attendance will receive free pizza courtesy of CiCi’s Pizza (while supplies last).
