PIONEERS POWER PAST PATRIOTS

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (October 2)On the strength of freshman outside hitter Danielle Veitenheimer’s season-high 13 kills, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers defeated the Dallas Baptist University Patriots in three games (30-23, 30-26, 30-25) on Tuesday night at Kitty Magee Arena.

Veitenheimer (pictured), whose previous high for kills in a match this year was just six, played what TWU head coach Shelly Barberee described as her “best match of the season”.

“Danielle is a very talented volleyball player,” said Barberee. “Tonight she really played up to her potential. She put down a couple of balls when she first went into the match and that helped her confidence. We kept going to her, and she kept delivering.”

Junior outside hitter Katie King also recorded double-figure kills (10) in the match for TWU. Junior Kandis Schroeder and freshman LyGene’ Traylor were effective at the net for the Pioneers with 6 and 4 block assists respectively. Sophomore setter Jessica Crow continued her pattern of season-long brilliance with 42 assists, 8 digs and 2 service aces.

Barberee said her team’s consistency was also a key to the win.

“We’ve been an up-and-down team the last few matches. Tonight (a three-game sweep) was exactly what we needed. We jumped on them early, then finished them off. We didn’t let up, or play down to their level. The kids had fun tonight, and that’s when they play their best volleyball.”

With 11 kills and two block assists, junior outside hitter Lauren Secord was the Patriots (6-9) top player in the loss. Sophomore outside hitters Tiffany Coffey and Amanda Emmert both added nine kills to the Patriots cause.

The comfortable win gave the Pioneers a measure of revenge over the Patriots. DBU swept TWU in three games earlier this season at the Pioneers’ own tournament.

“That was the only time we’ve been swept this year,” said Barberee. “I reminded my players of that fact in the locker room before the game. And, to their credit, they came out and responded with a dominant performance.”

The win by TWU was their fourth in their last five games. Now 10-8 on the season, the Pioneers will play another non-conference match this Friday night, October 5, when they meet the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders at 6:00 p.m. in Magnolia, Arkansas.
