SCHROEDER IS SUPERB IN TWU WIN
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (October 25) - Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder totaled 16 kills on just 23 swings to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a comfortable three-game win (30-28, 30-27, 30-22) over the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions on Thursday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
Schroeder’s attack percentage for the match was a TWU season-high .609. Her efficient effort was easily the highlight of the night for the Pioneers.
“Kandis set the tone for us,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “When she had an opportunity to put the ball down, she delivered. She got hot early in the match, so we just kept going to her. I was very impressed with the way she played.”
Freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan (nine kills on 10 swings) and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (seven kills on 21 swings) also played a prominent role in the Pioneers’ offensive attack. TWU sophomore setter Jessica Crow contributed with 40 set assists while senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus added 16 digs.
Middle blocker Colleen Favaro was the top player in the loss for the Lions (9-16, 3-7 LSC). Favaro, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, tallied a match-high 23 kills.
The Lone Star Conference win was the third in their last four matches for TWU. The Pioneers (15-10, 6-4 in the LSC) are now alone in fourth place in the conference standings and are close to clinching a berth in the 2007 Lone Star Conference Postseason Volleyball Tournament. The top eight teams in the final regular season conference standings will qualify for the tourney to be held November 8-10 at the site of the regular season conference champion. TWU has played in the conference tournament for the last four years in a row.
The Pioneers have just two regular season matches left, both against LSC foes and both on their home court. On Thursday, November 1, TWU will take on the University of Central Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 3, the Pioneers will square off against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 2:00 p.m.
