TWU OVERCOMES DBU
Box Score
DALLAS, Texas (October 23) - The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers picked up a non-conference win on Tuesday night as they defeated the Dallas Baptist University Patriots in four games, 18-30, 31-29, 30-27, 30-25.
After dropping the first game by a lopsided margin, the Pioneers were able to recover and win three straight games from the Patriots.
“DBU really took it to us in the first game,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “We played defense the entire game, and that played right into their hands. They were dictating the points, and we were just trying to hang in there. The turning point came in the second game when we responded and turned the tables a little bit. Once we started to pick it up on offense, we were able to get control of the match.”
The play of sophomore setter Jessica Crow was the key to the Pioneers’ come-from-behind effort. Crow, a Longview, Texas native, nearly recorded a triple-double in the match as she totaled 14 kills, 49 assists, and 9 digs.
“Jessica gave us a lift tonight,” explained Barberee. “We needed someone to give us a spark after that first game, and she stepped up and did just that.”
In addition to Crow, three other TWU players – freshman outside hitter Kendra Coulson (15), sophomore middle blocker Danielle Pegues (11), and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor (10) – recorded double-digit kills in the match. Traylor also contributed a TWU team-best four total blocks.
The win was the second of the season for the Pioneers (14-10) over the Patriots (9-18). The two teams split a pair of matches earlier this year, with DBU sweeping TWU on Friday, September 7, and TWU coming back to drop DBU in three games on Tuesday, October 2. TWU now leads the all-time series between the two schools by a 9-7 margin.
TWU will return to Lone Star Conference play when they host the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions on Thursday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
