PIONEERS SWEEP PAST ASU
Box Score
SAN ANGELO, Texas (October 18) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers traveled to San Angelo, Texas on Thursday night and picked up a three-game Lone Star Conference victory over the Angelo State University Rambelles, 30-28, 30-23, 30-21.
Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder (pictured) was the offensive catalyst for TWU as she totaled 12 kills on 20 swings for an outstanding .500 attack percentage. Freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor and sophomore middle blocker Danielle Pegues contributed as well with 9 and 8 kills respectively. Sophomore setter Jessica Crow tossed up 33 assists while senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus dug up 16 balls.
The collective team effort helped the Pioneers make up for the absence of two injured starters, junior outside hitter Katie King and junior right side hitter Sharon Schaffner.
“I’ve got to give the girls credit,” said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. “They knew that with Katie and Sharon being out, it was up to them to raise their level of play. Everybody stepped up, and we were able to pick up an important conference win in a hostile environment.”
The turning point of the match came late in the first game. ASU had surged to a 27-20 lead and appeared to be in position to claim the early momentum. The Rambelles, however, were unable to close out the Pioneers. Benefitting from seven ASU attack errors, TWU pieced together a 10-1 run to win the game 30-28 and silence the Rambelles’ volatile home crowd.
“That was the difference in the match,” explained Barberee. “They had us on the ropes. Had we dropped that first game, it would have been really hard to come back. We pulled together though, and started to play with more consistency. They made a bunch of mistakes, and we were able to capitalize.”
With the win, the Pioneers improved their record to 13-9 for the season and 5-3 in LSC play. The loss dropped the Rambelles to 6-16 for the year and 4-3 in the conference.
Having won four out of their last five matches, TWU will look to continue their strong play when they face another conference opponent, Abilene Christian University, on Saturday, October 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
