SEVEN TWU VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS EARN LSC ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS
DENTON, Texas (Nov.10) – Seven Texas Woman’s University volleyball players--Robin Hawkins, Kandis Schroeder, Sharon Schaffner, Michele Villarreal, Madlyn Craven, Jill Arnold, and Kasye Richmond--received Lone Star Conference academic honors on Friday.
Hawkins and Schroeder (pictured)were named to LSC North Division All-Academic Volleyball Team.
Schaffner, Villarreal, Craven, Arnold, and Richmond, were selected to the LSC North Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
To be eligible for LSC academic recognition, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average with a minimum of 24 semester hours completed at the nominating institution.
All 13 LSC volleyball teams had at least one player receive academic honors, but only Midwestern State matched the Pioneers’ total of seven players being chosen to the All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
This is the third year in a row that Hawkins, an outside hitter, has received a LSC academic award. In 2004, her sophomore season, the marketing major from Flower Mound was a member of the LSC North Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Last year, as junior, she was chosen for the LSC North Division All-Academic Team. As a senior this season, Hawkins maintained her 3.92 GPA while still performing at a high level on the court. She was one of TWU’s top all-around players and received an honorable mention nod on the LSC North Division All-Conference team.
Schroeder, a sophomore middle blocker from Windthorst, Texas, has a perfect 4.0 GPA and is a mathematics major. She was a year-long force at the net for TWU, as she led the Pioneers this season in block solos (14), block assists (98) and total blocks (112). She was selected to the LSC North Division All-Conference second team.
A sophomore psychology major from Henrietta, Texas, with a 3.92 GPA, Schaffner played in 94 games for TWU this season, registering 116 kills and 32 total blocks. The right side hitter also had 59 digs for the year.
A San Antonio native, Villarreal has a 3.76 GPA while majoring in accounting at TWU. The sophomore libero recorded 269 digs in 121 games played this season. Her 43 service aces was also the third-highest total on the Pioneers team this year.
Craven, a sophomore outside hitter who hails from White Oak and is a health studies major, played in 61 games for TWU this year. She totaled 84 kills and 22 block assists this season for the Pioneers while maintaining a 3.60 GPA in the classroom.
Arnold, a senior setter/right side hitter from Alvin, Texas, is a math major with a 3.34 GPA. She appeared in 58 games for the Pioneers this season, tossing up 509 sets for an average of 8.78 assists per game. Arnold also totaled 23 service aces and 111 digs this year.
Richmond is a junior outside hitter from Pilot Point, Texas. She played in 93 games for the Pioneers this season, totaling 27 kills, 17 assists and 6 service aces. Richmond is a kinesiology major with a 3.25 GPA.
The Pioneers wrapped up their 2006 volleyball campaign last Friday, Nov. 3, with a loss to Cameron University in the semifinals of the LSC Volleyball Tournament. TWU finished the year with a 24-12 overall record and a 7-6 mark in conference play.
