TWU COMES UP SHORT AGAINST CAMERON
LAWTON, Oklahoma (Nov. 3) – The 2006 Texas Woman's University volleyball season came to an end on Friday night with a 3 games to 0 loss to the Cameron Aggies in the semifinals of the 2006 Lone Star Conference Tournament.
The Aggies, playing on their home court in front of a crowd of approximately 500 people, seized control of the match early on with a convincing 30-16 win in game one. TWU would try to battle back, but the Pioneers had no answer for the efficient effort of the home team. Cameron won game two 30-26, and then the Aggies closed out the match with a 30-21 win in game three.
Cameron's two Turner sisters, senior middle hitter Taran and senior right side hitter Tayler, were the offensive standouts in the contest. Thanks to a .387 hitting percentage, Taran hammered home a match-high 16 kills. Tayler chipped in with 10 kills of her own and a .455 hitting percentage. Tayler was also a defensive force in the match, as she recorded 6 block assists. Chelsea Pena, the Aggies outstanding libero, handled the majority of the defensive duties for Cameron with a match-high 20 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Kandis Schroeder and sophomore outside hitter Krystle Everett shined in the defeat for TWU. Schroeder totaled a TWU team-high 12 kills and 4 block assists while Everett tallied 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior setter Jill Arnold also played well for the Pioneers, as she tossed up 37 assists in the match.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee said that her young team pressed a little in the match.
"We made way too many mental errors tonight. I don't think we were as relaxed as we were last night (in the Pioneers tournament quarterfinal win over ACU), and that showed. Maybe we wanted to win a little too much and that caused us to tense up," she stated.
The win by the Aggies (25-3, 11-2 in the LSC) was their eleventh in a row. Cameron has not lost a match since a Sept. 30 defeat at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Cameron will now face West Texas A&M in the tournament finals on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will receive an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division II national volleyball tournament.
The loss sets TWU's final season record at 24-12 and 8-6 in LSC play.
"I hate to see our season end like this," concluded Barberee. "But I am so proud of this team, especially our seniors. We had an amazing year and I am very excited about the way we finished up. To advance all the way to the conference tournament semifinals is a tremendous accomplishment."
