PIONEERS READY FOR LONE STAR CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Denton , Texas - Thanks to a four-match winning streak to close out their regular season, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers volleyball team qualified for the 2006 Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament.
TWU finished its 2006 campaign with a 23-11 overall record and a 7-5 mark in conference play. The Pioneers enter the LSC tournament as the third seeded team from the North Division.
This year’s LSC volleyball tournament will be played in Lawton, Oklahoma at Aggie Gym on the campus of Cameron University. Cameron is the host team for this event based on the fact that the Aggies finished as the North Division’s number one seed in regular season LSC play.
The Pioneers, who are in the postseason tournament for the fourth consecutive year, begin tourney play on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. against the two-time defending LSC tournament champion Abilene Christian University Wildcats. ACU, the second seeded team from the South Division, finished the regular season last weekend with an 18-9 overall record and an 8-2 mark in conference play. The Wildcats are currently ranked second in the NCAA Division II Southwest Regional rankings.
Thursday’s match will be the second meeting of the season between the Pioneers and the Wildcats. TWU and ACU squared off on Saturday, October 7 at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament in Kingsville. In that match, ACU rallied from a two-games-to one deficit to defeat TWU 3 games to 2. Junior outside hitter Abbie Lowry was the catalyst in the victory for ACU, as she hammered home a match-high 24 kills. Senior middle blocker Nicole Everett shined for TWU in the loss, totaling 12 kills, 1 block solo and 8 block assists.
This will be thirty-third meeting all-time between TWU and ACU. The Wildcats have the upper hand in the all-time series, 19-13.
It is a bit ironic that Abilene Christian will be TWU’s first opponent in this year’s LSC tournament. In the 2005 conference tournament, the Pioneers defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville in four games before losing to ACU in three games in the tourney semifinals.
The winner of the TWU/ACU match on Thursday will advance to Friday’s (November 3) semifinal match against Cameron. The winner of the other quarterfinal contest on Thursday (UCO vs. TSU) will move on to play the top seed from the South Division, West Texas A&M. Friday’s winners will then meet for the conference crown on Saturday (November 4) night. The conference tournament champion will receive the LSC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
