PIONEERS QUALIFY FOR LSC TOURNEY WITH VICTORY OVER SWOSU
DENTON, Texas (Oct. 28) – With a convincing 30-10, 30-15, 30-18 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday afternoon, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers claimed third place in the North Division of the Lone Star Conference and qualified for the 2006 LSC postseason volleyball tournament.
Saturday’s contest at Kitty Winter Magee Arena was the final regular season match for the Pioneers (23-11 overall/7-5 LSC). It was also the final home match for four TWU senior volleyball student-athletes—Robin Hawkins, Nicole Everett, Jill Arnold, and Carrie Klein.
“I am so proud of our seniors. All four of them played outstanding, and it felt so good to see them win the final home game of their career,” said Pioneers head coach Shelly Barberee. “We had to have this win to make it to the conference tournament, and my team delivered with a dominating performance.”
TWU seized the momentum in the match early on. And, playing with the lead helped the Pioneers finish off the Bulldogs.
“I thought the way we played in game one (a 30-10 TWU win) really set the tone for the entire match. SWOSU had been struggling coming in here, and we jumped on them right away. That was important for us,” stated Barberee.
Hawkins, an outside hitter, paced the Pioneers offense in the match with 12 kills. Middle blockers Nicole Everett and Kandis Schroeder contributed 8 and 7 kills respectively. Setter Jill Arnold tossed up 19 assists and had four block assists. Outside hitter Katie King served up two aces.
The win by TWU was their third straight, and sends the Pioneers into the LSC tournament for the fourth consecutive season. TWU will play their first match of the tournament on Thursday, November 2 (time, opponent, and location to be determined).
