FIGHT FOR POSTSEASON BERTH CONTINUES TONIGHT FOR PIONEERS
DENTON , Texas (Oct. 24) – A possible Lone Star Conference postseason tournament berth is on the line tonight when the TWU Pioneers volleyball team meets the Midwestern State Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
After splitting a pair of conference matches last week, the Pioneers enter the final week of their 2006 regular season tied with Southeastern Oklahoma State University for third place in the North Division of the LSC. The top three teams from each division (North and South) of the conference will qualify for the LSC tournament to be held November 2-4.
Midwestern State is currently tied for fifth in North Division of the conference standings, but the Mustangs are just one game behind TWU, and, a win tonight would vault MSU right back into postseason contention.
A victory this evening by the Pioneers would greatly enhance TWU’s chances of qualifying for the tournament. With a win, TWU would move a game in front of SOSU with just one conference match left to play (this Saturday, Oct. 28 vs. last place SWOSU). SOSU also has two conference matches scheduled this week, and neither one of them will be easy for the Bulldogs. On Thursday, Oct. 26, SOSU will visit the North Division leading Cameron University Aggies. On Saturday, Oct. 28, SOSU is will play at UCO, the second place team in the division.
Should the regular season conference schedule end with two (or more) teams tied for third place in the North Division standings, a series of tiebreakers (beginning with head-to-head match records) will be used to determine who will qualify for the conference tournament.
Tonight’s game will also be Pioneer Pride and Pizza Night and a Maroon Out. Fans attending the game will receive free pizza (while supplies last) courtesy of CiCi’s Pizza. Fans are also asked to wear their Maroon Out t-shirts to this contest. At intermission of this evening’s match (between the second and third games), the Pioneer gymnastics team will be honored with a ring ceremony celebrating their 2006 USAG Collegiate National Championship.
