TWU BATTLES BACK TO BEAT A&M-COMMERCE

COMMERCE, Texas (Oct. 21) – A gutty come-from-behind effort earned the Texas Woman's University Pioneers a five-game victory over the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in Saturday afternoon Lone Star Conference volleyball action in Commerce, Texas.

The Pioneers lost the first game of the match by a 17-30 score. After bouncing back to take game two by a 30-28 margin, TWU dropped the third game 27-30. A 30-23 victory in game four forced the decisive fifth game. TWU controlled the final game from start to finish, and, consequently, finished off the Lions with a convincing 15-8 win in game five.

"This was a hard-fought match," said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee,"I'm really proud of the way our team responded in games four and five. Our backs were against the wall, and we stepped up and played the type of volleyball that we can play. We controlled the court the last two games, and that made the difference in the match."

Krystle Everett was once again the Pioneers top offensive player in the match. The sophomore outside hitter from Crandall, Texas led TWU with 17 kills. Senior outside hitter Robin Hawkins added ten kills for TWU, and sophomore middle blocker Kandis Schroeder chipped in with ten kills of her own. Senior setter Jill Arnold was another catalyst for TWU as she totaled 34 assists and 20 digs in the match. Sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus was a factor for TWU in the service game as she recorded eight aces in the match.

The win by the Pioneers evened their Lone Star Conference season record at 5-5. TWU's victory, coupled by Southeastern Oklahoma State's loss to Midwestern State, pulls TWU back into a tie for third place in the North Division of the conference. The top three teams in each division (North and South) of the LSC will qualify for the conference tournament to be held the first weekend in November.

Next up on the Pioneers schedule is a 7:00 p.m. home game at Kitty Magee Arena on Tuesday, October 24 against Midwestern State.
