PIONEERS FALL TO STREAKING SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
DURANT, Oklahoma (Oct. 19) – The Texas Woman's University Pioneers lost a crucial Lone Star Conference volleyball match on Thursday night, falling to the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm in four games, 20-30, 27-30, 32-30, 26-30.
The win by SEOSU was their tenth in a row, and puts the streaking Savage Storm (19-9/5-4 conf.) alone in third place in the LSC North Division standings. Conversely, the defeat for TWU was their third in a row (and fifth in their last six games). The Pioneers (19-11/4-5 conf.) are now in fifth place in the conference standings, and currently on the outside looking in for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. The top three teams from each division of the conference will qualify for the postseason competition.
Shelly Barberee, TWU's head coach, said a lack of cohesion hurt her team in the loss.
"Honestly, I don't think we played as a team tonight. Collectively, we weren't on the same page at all in the match. This was a huge opportunity for us, and we let it slip away. We need to regroup and be ready to respond in our next match if we want to qualify for the conference tournament," stated Barberee.
Kandis Schroeder and Krystle Everett were two bright spots in the loss for the Pioneers. Schroeder led TWU with 18 kills and recorded a .271 hitting percentage. Everett contributed 16 kills of her own.
SEOSU benefited from a balanced attack, as five different Savage Storm players totaled double-digit kills.
TWU will next be in action on Saturday, October 21, when they play at Texas A&M-Commerce at 2:00 p.m.
