CONFERENCE LEADING AGGIES DENY PIONEERS
DENTON , Texas (Oct. 14) – A 17-15 win in the decisive fifth game gave the Cameron University Aggies a 3-2 victory over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.
TWU dropped the first two games of the match by identical 30-27 scores. Following intermission, the Pioneers rallied, taking game three by a 30-16 margin and then forcing game five with a 30-24 win in game four.
In the final game, TWU looked poised to complete its comeback as they held a 14-12 lead with sophomore Kandis Schroeder serving to give TWU the match. The Aggies, however, rallied, as junior Fernanda Queiroz slammed home three straight kills to put CU on top 15-14. After the Pioneers Madlyn Craven tallied a kill to tie the game at 15, Cameron answered back. Queiroz nailed another kill, and then, on match point, the Pioneers Krystle Everett sailed an attack effort out of bounds.
The win for Cameron (20-3) was their sixth in a row, and puts the Aggies alone in first in the Lone Star Conference standings with a mark of 6-2. The loss by TWU gives the Pioneers a 19-9 mark for the season and a 4-4 record in LSC play.
Queiroz and Taran Turner were the catalysts in the win for Cameron. Queiroz, a junior from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, registered 25 kills and had a hitting percentage of .209. Turner posted a hitting percentage of .265 and had 20 kills.
Four players for TWU-Kandis Schroeder (15), Krystle Everett (14), Nicole Everett (16), and Katie King (17)-recorded double figure kills in the loss by the Pioneers. King was the most efficient TWU player in the match, as she totaled a .353 hitting percentage. Schroeder also added seven block assists for TWU.
Pioneer head coach Shelly Barberee saw a lot of positives in the tough defeat for her club.
“We showed a ton of heart today,” stated Barberee. “We got down early, losing the first two games. At that point, playing against the number one team in the conference, we very easily could have packed up our tents and went home. But we fought all the way back, and very easily could have won the match. Things just didn’t go our way in the end.”
The Pioneers will be away from home for three games next week, playing at Dallas Baptist on Tuesday, October 17, at Southeastern Oklahoma on Thursday, October 19, and then competing at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, October 21.
