PIONEERS PUSH PAST UCO IN FIVE GAME THRILLER

DENTON , Texas (Oct. 12) – The TWU Pioneers picked up a crucial Lone Star Conference volleyball victory on Thursday night as they defeated the University of Central Oklahoma Broncos 3 games to 2 at Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall.

Sophomore middle blocker Kandis Schroeder and sophomore Krystle Everett were the stars of the match for TWU, as both players pounded out 20 kills apiece to pace the host Pioneers to victory, 30-19, 28-30, 33-31, 27-30, and 15-10.

The loss was just the second conference defeat of the season for the LSC leading Bronchos. For TWU, the victory snapped a two-match losing streak and kept the Pioneers undefeated on their home court this season (9-0).

Schroeder hammered home six kills in the first game of the evening, helping TWU jump out to the 1-0 lead in the match.

UCO rebounded to win the second game 30-28, thanks to five kills from outside hitter Kelsey Reynolds and four service errors by the Pioneers.

TWU forged back in front two games to one with a 33-31 win in game three. Everett banged in seven kills, while senior outside hitter Robin Hawkins chipped in defensively with 8 digs.

The Bronchos forced the decisive fifth game with a 30-27 win in game four.

The final game was tied at six points apiece before the Pioneers pushed ahead. Kills by Sharon Schaffner, Krystle Everett and Nicole Everett were sandwiched around a Robin Hawkins service ace and put TWU on top 10-6. With the momentum on their side, TWU was able to close out the Pioneers on their fourth match point when Schroeder’s kill escaped the UCO defense to give the Pioneers a 15-10 win.

TWU head coach Shelly Barberee credited the win to a collective effort by her team.

“Everybody played well. It takes a total team effort to beat the top team in the conference and that’s what we had tonight. My team was poised, and we stayed relaxed. In the fifth game, we didn’t tense up, and, consequently, we played our best volleyball of the night,” stated Barberee.

The Pioneers are now 19-8 on the season and 4-3 in LSC play. UCO drops to 15-9 overall and 5-2 in conference matches.

TWU will look for its second win in a row when they host the Cameron Aggies at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 14.
