PIONEERS DROP PAIR AT LSC CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Oct. 7)  – The Texas Woman's University Pioneers volleyball team struggled on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches on the final day of a Lone Star Conference Crossover tournament at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

The Pioneers came up just short in their first match of the day, losing a five-game heartbreaker to the Abilene Christian Wildcats by scores of 28-30, 30-24, 30-21, 21-30, and 10-15. TWU was its own worst enemy in the decisive fifth game, committing six attack errors and one service error to help ACU to the win. Kandis Schroeder, Krystie Everett, Nicole Everett, and Katie King all recorded double digit kills in the loss for TWU. Nicole Everett was also a force defensively in the defeat for the Pioneers, as she had one solo block and eight block assists. Jill Arnold led the TWU service game, blasting five service aces past the Wildcats.

In their last match of the tournament, the Pioneers ran into the buzzsaw otherwise known as the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs. WTAMU swept the Pioneers in three straight games-30-22, 30-25, 30-17-to win their fifteenth match in a row and remain undefeated in LSC Conference play. TWU could not get anything going offensively against the Lady Buffs, as their hitting percentage in the match was an uncharacteristically low .101. Kandis Schroeder’s 10 kills was one of the few highlights in the loss for TWU.

Despite the two defeats, Pioneers head coach Shelly Barberee called this weekend’s tournament a success for her team.  “We played the top three teams (TSU, ACU, WTAMU) in the conference on back-to-back days. On Friday, we defeated a very good Tarleton State team. Then today, we pushed ACU to five games before running out of steam against West Texas A&M. I’m not happy with the losses, but I feel very positive about the way we played,” stated Barberee.

Now with a record of 18-8 on the season (4-3 in Lone Star Conference play), the Pioneers will return to action on Thursday, October 12 when they host Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall.
