SWEEP OVER ST. MARY’S SENDS STREAK TO SIX

Denton, Texas (Sept. 30) – Not only is Texas Woman 's University on a six-match winning streak after a sweep over St. Mary’s University, 30-24, 30-25, 30-11, the Pioneers are also undefeated at home.  TWU has won all seven home matches in the friendly confines of Kitty Magee Arena.

“My team does not travel well,” Head coach Shelly Barberee said.  “It’s true!  The team doesn’t do well on the road.  We enjoy playing at home and I think they remember the last thing I tell them out of the huddle before the match starts.  Defend your turf.”

The Pioneers (17-5) did just that against the Rattlers (14-8).  Both teams did not hit well but TWU and St. Mary’s are both solid defensive teams.  TWU started with a poor .080 hitting percentage in game 1, improved to a .182 in game 2 and then poured on the attack in game 3 at a clip of .462.  The Pioneers ended with a .202 for the match compared to the Rattlers’ .000.

The offense and defense was spread amongst all the TWU players with Krystle Everett leading with 11 kills followed by Kandis Schroeder and Nicole Everett who notched eight each.  Heather Marcus had 15 digs with Jessica Crow adding nine and Robin Hawkins turning in eight.

“The offense was definitely spread around,” Barberee said.  “I think that’s why it’s hard to play us because each game we have different people stepping up.  And we played some really nice defense today.  I am proud of them.”

TWU moves back into Lone Star Conference North Division play on Oct. 3 rd when they travel to Midwestern State.  That match will be the halfway point in the league schedule.

“I’m so glad we have four of our last six North Division matches at home,” Barberee added.  “Our home fans are incredibly supportive and I know we can finish strong.”
