PIONEERS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO FIVE
WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Sept. 28) – Texas Woman's University has now won five consecutive matches with a 3-1 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University Thursday night, 30-22, 23-30, 30-25, 30-19. TWU goes above .500 in Lone Star Conference North Division play at 3-2 and improves to 16-5 overall.
"It wasn't one of our better games but our overall hitting percentage was decent," Head coach Shelly Barberee said. "Our timing was off though and we can play much better. It's just hard traveling four hours and then getting out [of the bus] to play."
As they have all season, TWU started slow and finished strong. The first game was not a good offensive show for either team, but TWU's .107 hitting percentage was better than SWOSU's .036. "It was not a pretty performance," Barberee commented. The score went back and forth until a SWOSU error gave TWU a two-point lead at 9-7. Two more attack errors pushed TWU's lead to 11-7 and the Pioneers began to pull away. During that stretch, Robin Hawkins served on 11 straight Pioneer points.
The Bulldogs (7-14, 1-4 LSC North) turned it around in game 2 though behind an attack percentage of .364. After being tied at 11, SWOSU built an eight-point lead at 21-13. The Pioneers closed the gap to four at 26-22 when Hawkins and Kandis Schroeder teamed for a block on Amber Coles. But SWOSU didn't miss on four kills to close out the game, 30-23.
The momentum swung back to TWU in game 3 when they won, 30-25, with their best hitting of the match at .295. The Pioneers then cruised through game 4, 30-19.
Krystle Everett provided the Pioneers' key offensive firepower with 19 kills on 33 attacks and only four errors for a .455 attack percentage. She added two aces, six digs and two block assists.
Robin Hawkins added 12 kills and led with six aces as TWU totaled 11 on the night. Kandis Schroeder tallied nine kills and three block assists.
"Hands down, Krystle [Everett] had a really nice game," Barberee said. "I'm glad we came away with a win and if you look at the schedule, we have to play four of our six conference matches in the first half [of league play] on the road. We just have Midwestern State [at Wichita Falls] next Tuesday to get to the halfway point."
The second half of the LSC North Division schedule should favor TWU with four matches at home. The Pioneers have not lost a home contest all season (6-0). They'll be tested by a tough non-conference opponent, St. Mary's University (14-6), Saturday in a 2 p.m. match in Kitty Magee Arena.
