VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS TARLETON STATE
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Sept. 27) – Running its winning streak to four in a row, Texas Woman's University swept Tarleton State University Tuesday night, 30-27, 30-26, 30-26, in non-conference action. The win improves TWU's overall record to 15-5 and drops TSU to 5-8.
"We played good tonight," Head coach Shelly Barberee said. "In all three games we started out behind and had to catch up. And even though the scoresheet says there was 137 people in the gym, it sounded like 400. Every time the ball came across to our side of the net, that crowd was incredibly loud."
The Pioneers found themselves down in each of the three games. In the first frame, they fell into a 10-point deficit before Barberee called a timeout. After making an offensive adjustment to set balls high and outside, the Pioneers caught the TexAnns at 25 and went on for the win, 30-27.
"I was screaming at the top of my lungs from the sideline and my players could not hear their names," Barberee said. They could not hear one thing I was saying so it was those six players on the court working with each other. It's very difficult when the setter cannot hear the hitters and the hitters cannot hear the setter. So we adjusted and got back in it each time."
TWU was down 7-1 in game two before switching the momentum in its direction. After recording a hitting percentage of .133 in game one, the Pioneers hit a .170 in game two and rallied for the 30-26 win.
It was the same story in game three where TWU had to tie and gain the lead, but this time the Pioneers were playing their game and had a hitting percentage of .200 and won, 30-26.
"We pulled through and that shows a lot about this team to come from behind each game," Barberee added. "Kandis [Schroeder] did well and Jessica's [Crow] all-around performance was great. She did a really great job and just missed a triple-double by two kills. She had 33 assists and 12 digs and for a setter to have that many digs says a lot about how she was playing."
Schroeder led the team in kills with 10 followed by Sharon Schaffner with nine. Three Pioneers - Robin Hawkins, Krystle Everett and Crow - each had eight kills.
Heather Marcus led with 33 digs.
TWU gets back to Lone Star Conference North Division play Thursday at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
