VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
Edmond, Okla. – It isn't the start head coach Shelly Barberee expected as the Texas Woman’s University volleyball team opened Lone Star Conference North Division play. The Pioneers lost their second straight match, this time to defending North Division champion Central Oklahoma, 23-30, 25-30, 24-30, Saturday afternoon.
TWU was on a 10-match winning streak when they ran into conference opponents Cameron on Thursday and UCO this afternoon. Both matches were 0-3 sweeps and dropped TWU to 11-5 and 0-2 in the league.
"I told the team we can't get discouraged and down. It's very hard to win at UCO," Barberee said. "Traditionally we have not down well on the road at Cameron and UCO. However, I said, it's got to cease."
Glaring on the scoresheet is TWU's lackluster performance from the service line. The Pioneers have relied heavily on aces through the first third of this season. They only averaged 0.67 aces per game today with two, one each from Kandis Schroeder and Kayse Richmond, which is remarkably lower than their average of 2.6 per game.
"Our serving game has not been there this week," Barberee said. "That's one thing that motivates us and when that element is missing, our effectiveness is decreased."
UCO freshman outside hitter Kelsey Reynolds led the Broncho attack with 13 kills and two errors on 34 attempts for a .324 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Penny Wascovich also hit in double figures for UCO with 10 kills and two errors on 23 attempts for a .348.
TWU hit a paltry .086 to UCO's .232. Krystle Everett was the team's kills leader with 15 and a .242 hitting percentage. Kandis Schroeder put down 11 kills, which she also did against Cameron, and had a .296 hitting percentage.
On defense, libero Heather Marcus recorded 21 digs. Barberee added that defensive specialist Michele Villarreal played with a lot of effort and heart, something that isn't reflected in the statistics.
The Pioneers step out of conference for a Tuesday contest against the University of Texas at Tyler, which begins a much-needed three-match homestand. TWU can get back on track as they continue conference play next Thursday and Saturday with Texas A&M-Commerce and Southeastern Oklahoma State, respectively.
"Three matches in a row at home is something I'm really looking forward to," Barberee said. "We need the support of our home crowd to get back into this conference race."
