VOLLEYBALL DROPS CONFERENCE OPENER TO CAMERON
LAWTON, Okla. – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team played well in two games, staying within reach of victory, but could not overcome a poor serving performance to drop its Lone Star Conference opener to Cameron University, 30-32, 29-31, 20-30.
The loss halts a 10-match winning streak that began on August 29.
"We played hard, we fought really hard and should have won one of those first two games," Head coach Shelly Barberee said. "If we had, we'd probably still be out there playing in a fifth game. But when the official called a hall handling error on us when we were tied at 29 in the second game instead of giving us the kill, the momentum swung immediately."
TWU (11-4, 0-1) was plagued by 10 service errors (3.33 per game) and managed only five service aces (1.67 per game) in the three-game sweep. That is unusual for a team that relies heavily on its service game. Coming into tonight's contest, the Pioneers were averaging 2.8 aces per game and only 1.4 serving errors per game.
"We played hard even though some of our best players were not having a good night," Barberee said. "In game one they beat us by two points and we had four missed serves."
Senior Robin Hawkins and sophomore Kandis Schroeder led the offense with 11 kills each followed by senior Nicole Everett who put down 10 kills. Junior Heather Marcus tallied 13 digs on the night.
"In game two, we were down 22-26, came back to go ahead 27-26, then fought back and forth with Cameron until it was tied again at 29," Barberee added. "We thought we had the kill to go ahead 30-29 for game point but the official called a ball handling error and gave Cameron the edge. Then a hitting error by Robin (Hawkins) gave them the game, 31-29."
Down by two games, it was a totally different TWU team in game three. Barberee commented that it was like Cameron couldn't do anything wrong and TWU couldn't do anything right.
"We have to get focused on the next game because this one is behind us," she said. "Our next goal is UCO. We know we made mistakes but we have to minimize those mistakes in the next match."
The Pioneers continue LSC North Division play at the University of Central Oklahoma (8-5, 1-0) Saturday.
