PIONEERS WRANGLE STEERS 3-0

DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 victory over Texas College Tuesday evening in Kitty Magee Arena.

Texas College forfeited the first game, 30-0, because the team was not ready to play at the 7 p.m. start time.  Once the match began, the Pioneers (11-3) dominated the Steers (1-6) with scores of 30-8, 30-8.

“I’m glad to see that our team didn’t let down with such an important conference weekend coming up,” Head coach Shelly Barberee.  “This match showed the true depth of my team since we varied our starting lineup.”

The offense was clicking on all cylinders as TWU hit at a .469 clip led by senior Nicole Everett’s 10 kills and sophomore Michele Villarreal’s four aces.  Sophomore Katie King added six kills as well.  The team totaled 28 kills and 10 aces with 26 defensive digs.  Junior Heather Marcus led in digs with 13.

In game two, TWU had leads of 12-3, 18-6 and 24-8 before rattling off the last six points on two Everett kills, three Steer errors and a Madlyn Craven ace for the last point.

In game three, again the Pioneers had dominating leads of 17-4 and 23-7.  At 25-8, Everett and Craven paired for back-to-back blocks.  There was a TWU kill followed by two TC errors.  Everett then put down a convincing kill at match point for the win.

“Our timing was much better tonight,” Barberee added.  “I was proud of the fact that our team garnered two honors (Krystle Everett and Heather Marcus were named players of the week) since we didn’t play our best in last weekend’s tournament.  We’ve been practicing all season for this upcoming weekend.  Regardless of our record at this point in time, (the) conference (schedule) is what matters.”

TWU opens Lone Star Conference North Division play at Cameron University (9-1) this Thursday followed by a Saturday afternoon match at the University of Central Oklahoma (6-5).
