VOLLEYBALL OPENS CROSSOVER TOURNEY WITH WIN

WICHITA FALLS , Texas – Texas Woman’s University volleyball opened the Heartland Crossover Tournament Friday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of  Dallas Baptist University.

The Pioneers (8-3) ran up scores of 30-26, 30-22, 30-27 and finished with 15 aces against the Patriots (3-8).  This is TWU 's seventh consecutive victory and the second time this season TWU has beaten DBU, previously winning 3-1 on Sept. 1st.

"We started off strong, hit a slump and finished with a win," Head Coach Shelly Barberee said.  "We started playing great ball at the beginning of game one, then we had a strong of hitting errors.  My hitters and my setters weren 't clicking when we started slumping.  I don 't know what got us off.  Volleyball 's such a mental game.  We played good but this wasn 't our best."

TWU was up by as much as 10 points in game one before letting DBU gain ground.  The Pioneers halted their hitting errors to switch the momentum and pull away for the win.  In game two the score was close throughout and again TWU got out of a slump to go up 2-0.  The Patriots played the Pioneers the closest in game three with the score tied at 24 and again at 26.  Senior Robin Hawkins served an ace, sophomore Krystle Everett put down a kill and DBU had an error to give TWU the match.

Everett led the attack at the net with 16 kills and freshman Jessica Crow recorded 27 assists.  Hawkins and junior Heather Marcus led the team with 17 digs each.  Hawkins finished with a double-double by adding 10 kills and nearly had a triple double with eight aces.

"This was a good game for Krystle, probably the most kills she 's had so far this season," Barberee added.  "We 're going to have to play much better tomorrow though."

The Pioneers continue tournament action Saturday with St. Edward 's at 11 a.m. and Incarnate Word at 4 p.m.
