TWU VOLLEYBALL DROPS PAIR TO RANKED TEAMS
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneer volleyball team finished with two losses at the Florida Southern Tournament on Saturday, but both were to highly ranked teams.
In the opener, the Pioneers (1-3) fell to No. 29 ranked Southwest Minnesota State University 3-0. In the afternoon match, TWU lost to No. 1 ranked Grand Valley State 3-0.
Despite the two losses, TWU head coach Shelly Barberee was pleased with how her team played against such touch competition.
"It's not every day we see the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. It was the fastest play I've seen in Division II ball," Barberee said. "My girls picked up their play. Today was the best I've seen them play yet."
The Pioneers had their chances against Southwest Minnesota. In the first game, TWU was within five points (24-29) despite four service errors in that game that they could not recover from.
Against Grand Valley State, TWU had a lead or was tied at various points in the first two games before falling in each. Kandis Schroeder led the Pioneers with 11 kills and a .290 hitting percentage. Jessica Crow had 20 assists and Heather Marcus added 17 digs.
"After two losses, you can walk off the court and be angry and sad, but that wasn't the case for me today," said Barberee. "I was pleased with the way we played. Even though our record doesn't show it, I was really happy with how we competed the whole tournament."
TWU will have their home opener Tuesday against Jarvis Chrisitan College. The match will begin at 6 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall on the TWU campus.
