PIONEERS SPLIT ON FIRST DAY OF ACTION
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team split in its first day of action at the Florida Southern University Tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
The Pioneers (1-1) fell to No. 11 ranked Florida Southern (30-18, 30-28, 30-14) before defeating Saint Leo University (25-30, 30-13, 30-19, 19-30, 15-6) in day one of the two-day tournament.
"To start out against a highly-ranked team like Florida Southern and then have to play back-to-back matches and manage to finish 1-1 is good for our team," said TWU head coach Shelly Barberee. "It was also good for us to go five games in that second match and get a win. We had a problem with that last year."
Against Florida Southern, the Pioneers had a hitting percentage of just .017 for the match including 29 errors. Krystle Everett led the way with nine kills, while Kandis Schroeder, Kayse Richmond and Nicole Everett each added five. Schroeder added two solo blocks and two block assists, while Nicole Everett had four block assists. Jessica Crow finished with 18 assists.
"That team (Florida Southern) only lost four matches all of last year and they didn't lose a single player from that team," Barberee said. "We learned a lot in the first game and then we really played to our potential in the second game, even though we lost 30-28."
The Pioneers defeated Saint Leo in their second match of the day thanks to outstanding play at the net from Kandis Schroeder and Nicole Everett. Schroeder finished with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .348, while Everett had seven kills and hit .368. Crow had 45 assists in the second match.
"In the second match we ran a 5-1 set with our freshman setter (Crow) and our hitting percentage went up and we served really well," Barberee added. "We had some service errors, but we served them tough which was our goal. Overall we just played much better. I was glad we came out of today with a 1-1 record."
TWU will wrap up the tournament today against Southwest Minnesota State at 10 a.m., and defending national champion Grand Valley State at 1:30 p.m.
