FIVE PLAYERS SIGN WITH PIONEERS
DENTON, Texas (May 22) – Kendra Coulson, Alyson Harlan, Megan Loftis, LyGene’ Traylor, and Sydney Veitenheimer have signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball for the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers.
Coulson, 5’8”, is an outside hitter who played three years (2004-06) of varsity volleyball at Abilene ( Texas) High School. In 2006, her senior season, she served as the Eagles team captain and was selected to the All-District 4-5A first team. As a junior in 2005, she earned All-District 4-5A second team honors. Coulson also accumulated numerous academic honors at AHS. She received three Academic All-State awards (2005-07), was a 2005 member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and a National Honor Society member in 2005-06.
Harlan, 5’10”, will come to TWU from Eustace ( Texas) High School. An outside hitter, Harlan earned three varsity letters (2004-06) and numerous awards as a member of Bulldogs volleyball team. As a sophomore in 2004, she won the Team Newcomer of the Year award and was chosen for the All-District 12-3A second team and the All-Henderson County first team. In 2005, her junior season, she was recognized as Co-Most Valuable Player of District 12-3A and the All-Henderson County Player of the Year. She was also named the Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Player. As a senior in 2006, she was the Bulldogs team captain and again received the team’s Most Valuable Player award. Additionally, she was chosen as the District 13-3A Most Valuable Player and the All-Henderson County Player of the Year. Harlan also piled up a lengthy list of academic honors at EHS. She received multiple Academic All-District and All-State awards and was a member of both the National Honor Society and the A/B Honor Roll. Later this month, she will serve as the salutatorian of her high school graduating class.
Loftis, a 5’8” setter, will transfer to TWU after playing two seasons (2005-06) at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. She averaged 11.7 assists per game last year to help the Buccaneers to a fifth-place finish at the 2006 NJCAA National Volleyball Championships. Loftis received numerous individual honors because of her outstanding play in 2006. She was named to the All-Region 14 first team and to the All-Tournament team at the Region 14 championship tournament. Additionally, she was recognized as the Region 14 Setter of the Year and the Outstanding Setter at the 2006 NJCAA National Volleyball Championships. She was also an honorable mention 2006 NJCAA All-American. Academically, Loftis was a member of the Blinn College Athletic Honor Roll during all four of her semesters in Brenham. Before going to Blinn, Loftis played three years (2002-04) of varsity volleyball at Cedar Park ( Texas) High School. At Cedar Park, she earned two second team All-District 14-5A selections and one team MVP award.
Traylor, 5’8”, is a middle blocker from Bellville ( Texas) High School. She lettered in volleyball for the Brahmas in both her junior (2005) and senior (2006) years. As a junior, she led Bellville to the 2005 UIL Class 3A State Championship. Last season as a senior, she carried her team all the way to the Region III-3A semifinals. She was named to the All-District 23-3A second team on two occasions and also received her team’s 2006 Most Valuable Hitter and Fighting Heart awards. Traylor was also chosen for numerous Academic All-District 23-3A teams for her work in the classroom at Bellville.
Veitenheimer, 5’8”, is a setter who played three years (2004-06) of varsity volleyball for Windthorst ( Texas) High School. She was chosen, as both a junior and senior, as the All-District 6A setter. In 2006, she was a UIL Class A first team All-State selection and a member of the TGCA (Texas Girls Coaching Association) All-State team. Veitenheimer, an honor student at Windthorst, was also a member of the National Honor Society and selected for many Academic All-District 6-A teams.
TWU head volleyball coach Shelly Barberee is excited about her 2007 recruiting class.
“This is a talented group of players,” said Barberee. “The majority of these young women are from small schools, but they all play with heart, know the game, and love the game. I’m looking forward to seeing them in Pioneer uniforms next fall.”
