CALLAHAN CHOSEN FOR ESPN THE MAGAZINE COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM
DENTON, Texas (May 9) - Texas Woman’s University sophomore outfielder Billie Callahan has been named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Softball second team.
Callahan, a Kinesiology major, is one of the top scholastic performers in the entire TWU athletic department. She totaled a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in the fall 2007 semester and currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.94.
The Austin, Texas native (pictured) also excelled on the diamond this season for the Pioneers. She collected 50 hits (the fourth-most on the team) in 168 at bats for a .298 batting average. She led all TWU players with 12 doubles while also scoring 18 runs and driving in 21 more. On March 20, she went 4-6 with four runs scored, two runs batted in, and two doubles in the Pioneers’ two wins over the University of the Incarnate Word and East Central University. Her play against the Cardinals and Tigers earned her the title of Lone Star Conference South Division Hitter of the Week for the week of March 17-24.
The CoSIDA honor is the second academic award received by Callahan in the last ten days. On May 1, she was picked for 2008 Lone Star Conference Softball South Division All-Academic team.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), in conjunction with ESPN the Magazine, selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
