FOUR PIONEER SOFTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE LSC ACADEMIC AWARDS
DENTON, Texas (May 1) – Four student-athletes from the Texas Woman’s University softball team earned academic awards this season from the Lone Star Conference.
Sophomore outfielder Billie Callahan and sophomore pitcher Allie Packer were chosen for the 2008 LSC Softball South Division All-Academic team. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone and junior infielder Shian Smitherman grabbed spots on the 2008 LSC South Division Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Callahan (pictured sliding at right) is a Kinesiology major from Austin, Texas. In the fall 2007 academic semester she totaled a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Her cumulative GPA through three semesters of her collegiate career is an outstanding 3.94. She also excelled on the field this season, hitting .298 with 50 base hits, 12 doubles (the most on the TWU team), 18 runs scored and 21 runs batted in. Callahan was named the LSC South Division Hitter of the Week for the week of March 17-24, 2008, after going 4-6 with four runs scored, two runs batted in, and two doubles in the Pioneers’ two wins over the University of the Incarnate Word and East Central University on Thursday, March 20.
Packer, a psychology major from Grapevine, Texas, also had a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the fall 2007 academic semester to raise her cumulative GPA to 3.956. She pitched 142 innings, won four games, and recorded 77 strikeouts in the circle this season for TWU. Her best outing of the year came on Saturday, April 12, when she held the number-one ranked team in the South Central region, the Angelo State University Rambelles, to just four hits and one earned run in a 1-0 TWU loss.
Boone, a Kinesiology major from Keller, Texas, has a 3.447 cumulative GPA. She led the Pioneers’ this season in several key offensive categories, including batting average (.348), at bats (178), runs scored (33), hits (62), triples (three), and walks (26). Her 42 steals were the most on the TWU team and the second-most in the entire LSC. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll appointment is the second for Boone in her career; she earned the same academic distinction in 2007. Boone was also picked for the 2008 All-LSC South Division second team earlier this week.
Smitherman is a social work major from Fort Worth with a 3.62 cumulative GPA. In limited action this season for the Pioneers, she collected 12 hits, scored three runs, and picked up five runs batted in. Her biggest hit of the year came in a 4-3 TWU win over East Central University on Wednesday, April 23. With the Pioneers trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Smitherman hit a single to drive in two runs and help TWU to the come-from-behind win.
“I’m proud of these four players,” said TWU softball assistant coach Kristin Minton. “We play so many games during softball season that their time is really stretched thin. To perform so well in the classroom, and on the field, takes a great deal of commitment and hard work.”
