JOHNSON’S HOT BAT HELPS TWU SPLIT WITH TAMK
TAMK 3, TWU 1 - Box Score
TWU 7, TAMK 2 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (April 5) – A two home run, five RBI performance from senior shortstop Rachel Johnson carried the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 7-2 win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in the second game of a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Johnson’s big effort at the plate helped the Pioneers salvage the final game of the three-game weekend series against the Javelinas. TAMK (22-24, 7-5 LSC South) defeated TWU (16-32, 2-7 LSC South) 3-2 on Friday night and then won the first game of day on Saturday by a 3-1 margin. Johnson provided the Pioneers only offense in those two losses with a two-run homer on Friday and a solo shot in Saturday’s afternoon’s opener.
Johnson (pictured) struck early in Saturday’s second game, driving a pitch from TAMK starting pitcher Courtney Rigamonti over the fence in right center field in the bottom of the first inning to put TWU on top 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, with TWU second baseman Meagan Peiser on third base, Johnson homered to left center field to extend the Pioneers’ lead to 3-0.
A throwing error by TAMK catcher Kristin Schumann allowed the Pioneers to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth and push their advantage to 5-0. Johnson then capped off her highly productive game in the bottom of the sixth by ripping a single to center field that drove in two more TWU runs.
The scintillating play of Johnson overshadowed a quality start by TWU pitcher Carly Case. The sophomore from Bowie scattered eight hits, struck out two, and allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work to record her tenth win of the season.
TWU will be back in action on Wednesday night, April 9, when they host an evening doubleheader at Pioneer Field (with games scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m.) versus Texas Wesleyan University.
