JAVELINAS SLIP PAST TWU 3-2
TAMK 3, TWU 2 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (April 4) – A clutch hit from designated player Kristin Schumann lifted the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas to a 3-2 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers in the opener of a three-game Lone Star Conference South Division series on Friday night at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Schumann, a junior from Corpus Christi, lined a double into left center field in the top of the sixth inning to score TAMK second baseman Shaun Bryan from second base and put the Javelinas on top 3-2. Bryan’s run proved to be decisive, as TWU was failed to score in their last two at bats of the game.
Junior pitcher Courtney Rigamonti picked up the win in the circle for the Javelinas (21-23, 6-4 LSC South). Rigamonti gave up eight hits, but only two runs, in a complete game pitching effort. Both of the TWU runs came in the bottom of the third inning when the Pioneers’ senior shortstop, Rachel Johnson (pictured at left), blasted a two-run homerun, her second of the year, over the fence in left center field. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone (two singles) and sophomore third baseman Kaley Frye (two singles) also had positive nights at the plate for TWU.
Sophomore pitcher Carly Case performed well in the loss for TWU. Case allowed nine hits and three earned runs, but struck out seven and walked only one.
The defeat snaps a modest three-game winning streak for the Pioneers and drops their record at 15-31 for the season and 1-6 in the LSC South.
TWU and TAMK will play twice tomorrow (Saturday, April 5), as a doubleheader between the two teams is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
