TWU TAKES TWO FROM TEXAS WESLEYAN
TWU 3, Texas Wesleyan 2 - Box Score
TWU 6, Texas Wesleyan 1 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (April 2) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday night, sweeping the Texas Wesleyan University Rams in a doubleheader played at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone (pictured throwing at right) was instrumental in helping the Pioneers to a 3-2 win in the first game of the night. The former Keller High School standout hit her second home run of the season, a deep shot to straightaway centerfield, to lead off the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, she singled to put her teammate, junior first baseman Ashley Martin, on third base with just one out. Martin eventually scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field by TWU senior shortstop Rachel Johnson. Boone also made the pivotal defensive play of the game when she delivered a perfect strike from centerfield to home plate in the top of the fifth inning to prevent Texas Wesleyan freshman catcher Haley Butler from scoring what would have been the go-ahead run from second base. Sophomore Carly Case earned the win in the circle for TWU, giving up just seven Texas Wesleyan hits while striking out seven.
The TWU bats heated up in the nightcap, banging out eleven hits, four of them for extra bases, in a 6-1 Pioneer win. Sophomore left fielder Billie Callahan led the TWU hit parade, tallying a double and a triple, while scoring a run and knocking in another. Sophomore right fielder Angie Arebalos also had a double and a single to drive in a pair of runs for the Pioneers. Additionally, TWU sophomore catcher Kaley Frye continued her torrid hitting, pushing home a run with a RBI double in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore pitcher Allie Packer had one of her best outings of the season in the win for TWU, working a complete game and allowing just four hits, one earned run, one walk, and striking out four.
TWU, now 15-30 on the season, will return to Lone Star Conference South Division play when they host a weekend series with the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas this Friday and Saturday, April 4th and 5th, at Pioneer Field. A single game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday night while a doubleheader (1/3 p.m.) is on tap for Saturday afternoon.
