TWU SOFTBALL TEAM INKS TWO
DENTON, Texas (April 29) – Two junior college players - catcher Lyndsey Lipscomb and utility infielder Chelsea Welch - signed National Letters of Intent to play softball at Texas Woman’s University.
Lipscomb (pictured at right) has played the last two seasons (2007-08) at Vernon College in Vernon, Texas. During her recently completed 2008 season, she posted a .358 batting average with 16 runs scored and 21 runs batted in. Eight of her 34 base hits were doubles and she drew 18 walks.
Lipscomb is a native of Garland, Texas. She played four years of varsity softball for the Garland High School Owls and graduated from GHS in the spring of 2006.
Welch (pictured at left) has two years (2007-08) of college softball experience at North Central Texas College (NCTC) in Gainesville, Texas.
She prepped for her stint at NCTC with four seasons (2003-06) of varsity of softball at Birdville High School in North Richland Hills, Texas. Welch earned numerous on-field honors for her outstanding play at BHS. As a freshman, she was named to the All-District 6-4A second team. As a sophomore, she took home All-District 6-4A first team honors. After her junior season, she was chosen as the District 6-4A Offensive Player of the Year and secured a spot as the second baseman on the All-Region I team. As a senior, she repeated as the District 6-4A Offensive Player of the Year. She also was picked for the 2006 Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star team and the 2006 All-Northeast team.
The commitments of Lipscomb and Welch give the Pioneers six players in their 2009 recruiting class. Third baseman Erin Hinojosa (who played with Welch at NCTC), shortstop Jessica Lamonica (from Denton’s Billy Ryan High School), infielder April Mandel (from Boyd High School), and first baseman Sherri Polanco (from Waxahachie High School) all signed with TWU during the fall 2007 early signing period.
