PIONEERS' SEASON ENDS IN A SWEEP AT ENMU
ENMU 1, TWU 0 - Box Score
ENMU 6, TWU 5 - Box Score
PORTALES, New Mexico (April 26) – The 2008 season for the Texas Woman’s University softball team came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers dropped both games of a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader to the Eastern New Mexico University Zias in Portales, New Mexico.
ENMU recorded a 1-0 win the first game of the day. The contest was a pitchers duel between the Zias’ Nicole Dickson and the Pioneers’ Allie Packer. Dickson notched the complete game win (and her second shutout of the year) by giving up just four hits (all of them singles) to the TWU hitters. Packer was equally as impressive in the circle as Dickson. The sophomore from Grapevine limited the Zias to just three hits, while striking out four, in a full seven innings of work. A defensive miscue by the Pioneers allowed ENMU to score the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. ENMU junior centerfielder Laura Thompson was on second base with one out. Thompson stole third base, and then came around to score when TWU senior third baseman Meagan Peiser misplayed the throw down the line from the Pioneers’ sophomore catcher Kaley Frye.
The Zias completed the sweep of the Pioneers by winning a 6-5 slugfest in the second game of the day. The hitters for ENMU and TWU combined for 20 hits in this high-scoring affair. TWU started the game strong, taking an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run to left center by senior shortstop Rachel Johnson (pictured) and an RBI single by junior designated player Amber Brooks. ENMU bounced back quickly, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first and then four unearned runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 5-3 advantage. TWU refused to fold, and they pulled to within a run at 5-4 when Johnson hit her second homer of the game (and team-high ninth of the season) in the top of the fifth. The Pioneers momentum continued in their next at bat as they tied the game at five when a fielding error by ENMU sophomore shortstop Casandra McCommons allowed TWU centerfielder Tiffanie Boone to score. ENMU answered the TWU rally by manufacturing a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Thompson walked to lead off the inning, stole second, stole third, and then scored on a throwing error by TWU junior first baseman Ashely Martin. Thompson’s run proved to be the game winner when ENMU junior pitcher Natalie Woodside set the Pioneers down in order in the top of the seventh.
The two losses set the Pioneers’ final regular season record at 18-42, 2-16 in the LSC South. ENMU finishes the year at 28-28, 6-12 in the LSC South.
