EASTERN NEW MEXICO DEFEATS TWU 9-1
ENMU 9, TWU 1 (6 innings) - Box Score
PORTALES, New Mexico (April 25) – The Texas Woman’s University softball team struggled on Friday afternoon, losing 9-1 in six innings to the Eastern New Mexico University Zias in a Lone Star Conference South Division game played in Portales, New Mexico.
ENMU starting pitcher Kristen Cruickshank controlled the Pioneer hitters throughout the day. The sophomore from Glendale, Arizona recorded her thirteenth win of the season by limiting TWU to just five hits and one earned run in a full six innings of work. Cruickshank also totaled three strikeouts and just one base on balls.
The TWU starting pitcher, sophomore Carly Case, was just as good as her ENMU counterpart in the early stages of the contest. Case held the Zias scoreless and gave up just two hits through the first three innings of play. ENMU broke through, however, in the bottom of the fourth inning when they used four hits, one hit batter, and one TWU error to score a pair of runs and go on top 2-0. The Zias then sealed the win by plating three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Pioneers scored their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth when senior shortstop Rachel Johnson doubled to left center to score sophomore left fielder Billie Callahan.
The defeat drops the Pioneers’ record to 18-40 on the season and 2-14 in the LSC South. The win improves the Zias’ season record to 26-28 and 4-12 in the LSC South.
TWU and ENMU will wrap up their three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon. The two games will be the last of the regular season for both the Pioneers and the Zias.
