HOT BATS HELP PIONEERS SWEEP ECU
TWU 9, ECU 2 - Box Score
TWU 4, ECU 3 - Box Score
ADA, Oklahoma (April 23) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers broke out the bats on Wednesday afternoon, totaling 22 hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader from the East Central University Lady Tigers at Lady Tiger Field in Ada, Oklahoma.
The TWU hit parade began in the first game of the day when they collected 15 hits in a comfortable 9-2 win over ECU. Four TWU players – sophomore catcher Kaley Frye, junior designated player Amber Brooks, sophomore left fielder Billie Callahan, and senior shortstop Rachel Johnson – had multiple-hits in the game for the Pioneers. Frye (pictured) had three singles and a solo home run (her fourth of the year), Brooks had two singles and a double, Callahan had a single and a double, and Johnson had a single and a solo home run (her team-leading seventh of the season). The longballs for Frye and Johnson came in back-to-back fashion to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Carly Case did her part in the circle for TWU, allowing only two runs on five hits while striking out six to pick up the complete game win. Case got out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the bottom of the sixth inning when she induced the Lady Tigers’ sophomore second baseman Hilary Hughes to hit into a 6-2-5-4 triple play.
“That was an exciting game,” was how TWU assistant coach Kristin Minton described game one. “We matched our season-high for hits, hit back-to-back homers, and turned a triple play. This team has been playing hard but not getting the results they deserve. I was happy to finally see a few breaks go our way.”
In game two, the Pioneers scored three-runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 4-3 win over the Lady Tigers. Junior first baseman Shian Smitherman had the first clutch hit in the rally for TWU, a two-run single to right field that plated senior third baseman Meagan Peiser and Frye to tie the game at three. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone then put the Pioneers on top 4-3 with a single to right center that scored Brooks from third base. Case relieved TWU starting pitcher Allie Packer to start the seventh inning and set the ECU hitters down in order to seal the one-run win for the Pioneers.
The two victories snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Pioneers (18-39). ECU falls to 20-33-1 with the two defeats. TWU will close out its 2008 season this weekend with three LSC South Division games in Portales, New Mexico against Eastern New Mexico. The Pioneers and the Zias will play a single game at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and then an afternoon doubleheader (beginning at 1:00 p.m.) on Saturday, April 26.
