PIONEERS LOSE A PAIR TO TARLETON STATE
TSU 5, TWU 1 - Box Score
TSU 5, TWU 1 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (April 19) - The Tarleton State University pitching duo of Brooke Saulters and Lauren Zearfoss allowed just seven hits in two games to help the TexAnns sweep a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader from the Texas Woman's University Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Saulters, a senior from Waco, tossed a complete game five-hitter for the TexAnns in the first game of the day, a 5-1 TSU win. Four of the Pioneers five hits were singles. The only extra base hit for TWU in the game came in the bottom of the first inning when senior shortstop Rachel Johnson (pictured) belted her Pioneer team-leading sixth home run of the season. Senior shortstop Kelli Gayle was the top offensive player in the contest for TSU, collecting two hits, knocking in three runs, and scoring one more.
Zearfoss followed Saulters’ pitching gem with one of her own, holding TWU to just two singles (from junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone and sophomore catcher Kaley Frye) and one run in another 5-1 TexAnns win. Gayle again provided most of the run support for Zearfoss, hitting her fourth home run of the season, scoring two runs, and picking up two runs batted in.
TSU moves to 24-22 overall and 12-3 in the LSC South with the two wins. The Pioneers record falls to 16-39 on the season and 2-13 in the LSC South play.
TWU will next play on Wednesday, April 23, at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. The Pioneers and the Tigers have an afternoon doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
