LAWSON PITCHES UNT PAST TWU
UNT 9, TWU 1 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (April 16) - University of North Texas pitcher Kayla Lawson allowed just one run on four hits in a full seven innings of work to lead the Mean Green to a 9-1 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Wednesday night at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Lawson, a sophomore from Edmond, Oklahoma, was dominant in the early stages of the game. She struck out five TWU batters and did not allow a hit in the first four innings of play. Her no-hit bid went by the wayside, however, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kayla Behrle (pictured at left), the Pioneers’ junior right fielder, hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to right center. Behrle’s longball seemed to momentarily rattle Lawson as she walked the next two TWU batters - junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone and freshman second baseman Hayley Siebman - she faced. Lawson settled down though, and promptly struck out the Pioneers’ Billie Callahan and Rachel Johnson to get out of the jam.
TWU threatened again in the bottom of the sixth. Senior third baseman Meagan Peiser led off the inning with an infield single. After two fly ball outs, Lawson gave up two straight walks to the Pioneers’ Shian Smitherman and Behrle to load the bases. Lawson squashed the Pioneers’ threat, however, when she struck out TWU sophomore outfielder Angie Arebalos to end the inning.
The Mean Green offense did plenty to support Lawson in the game. UNT piled up 15 hits, five of them for extra bases (four doubles and one home run), against the TWU pitching duo of Allie Packer and Carly Case. Senior shortstop Katya Muller (three hits, two runs scored, one RBI) and freshman catcher Courtney Bradshaw (two hits, three runs batted in) were the stars at the plate for the Mean Green.
The win by UNT was their 23 rd of the year - single season high for the Mean Green program. The victory also helped the Mean Green (23-26) avenge a 5-4 loss to the Pioneers (16-36) across town at their home field, Lovelace Stadium, on Wednesday, March 12.
TWU will be back in action at Pioneer Field this weekend when they play three games against a Lone Star Conference South Division opponent, Tarleton State University. The Pioneers and the TexAnns will play a single game Friday night, April 18, at 5:00 p.m. and then an afternoon doubleheader (beginning at 1:00 p.m.) on Saturday, April 19.
NOTES: Wednesday night's game was the first-ever "Think Pink" Night for the TWU Softball team in an effort to promote breast cancer awareness. Both the TWU and the UNT players wore pink jerseys for the contest. Admission was free, but donations were accepted for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Commemorative "Think Pink" TWU visors were sold and there was an ongoing "Think Pink" raffle throughout the game (with all monies raised going to the Komen fund). Additionally, a $1 donation was requested (again for the Komen fund) from the fans for each of the seven strikeouts the Pioneer pitchers had in the game. The total amount of money raised (from donations, visor sales, and the "Think Pink" raffle) was $299.00.
