MUSTANGS’ BIG INNINGS DOOM PIONEERS

MSU 8, TWU 0 (five innings)- Box Score
MSU 6, TWU 5 - Box Score

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 5) Texas Woman’s University got the better of Midwestern State University for ten of the twelve innings the two schools played on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for TWU, the Mustangs needed only two big innings to pick up a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas.

In the first game of the day, MSU took advantage of five TWU errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to score eight unearned runs and claim an 8-0 victory in five innings. Sophomore Allie Packer, who allowed just four hits and struck out three, was the hard-luck loser in the circle for the Pioneers. Senior shortstop Rachel Johnson paced TWU at the plate in game one with two singles.

In game two, it appeared as if the Mustangs’ defensive deficiencies were going to be the difference-maker. The Pioneers capitalized on five MSU errors with some timely hitting to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. MSU, however, scored four runs on five hits in their final at bat off of the Pioneers’ ace pitcher, sophomore Carly Case, to grab a come-from-behind 6-5 win. All four of the Mustangs seventh inning tallies came with two outs. Senior catcher Lindsey Voigt (a two RBI single) and junior first baseman Jessica Rodriguez (a two RBI double) had the big hits in the rally for MSU. Johnson and sophomore outfielder Billie Callahan had a double and a single apiece in the loss for TWU. Sophomore outfielder Angie Arebalos also collected two base hits in the game for the Pioneers.

MSU improves to 16-9 on the season with the two wins. The Pioneers’ record drops to 7-19 with the two losses.

TWU will return to Lone Star Conference South Division play this weekend with a three-game series at Abilene Christian University on Saturday, March 8 (DH) and Sunday, March 9.
