WIN OVER #7 SOSU HIGHLIGHTS FINAL DAY OF TOURNEY FOR TWU

East Central 11, TWU 3 - Box Score

DURANT, Oklahoma (March 30) – Two Texas Woman’s University pitchers - junior Ashley Martin and sophomore Carly Case - combined to hold the potent Southeastern Oklahoma State University offensive attack to six hits and one run and lift the Pioneers to a 3-1 win over the Savage Storm on the final day of the 2008 Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament in Durant, Oklahoma.

Martin (pictured) started the game for TWU and gave up just three hits, all singles, while striking out three, in five innings of shutout work. Case, making just her second relief appearance of the season, set the Savage Storm, the seventh-ranked team in this week’s NFCA Division II Top 25 poll, down in order in the sixth inning and then worked her way out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

The Pioneers’ pitching tandem received plenty of defensive help from their teammates. The TWU outfield trio of Billie Callahan (LF), Tiffanie Boone (CF), and Angie Arebalos (RF) made several diving and running catches to stifle potential SOSU run-scoring opportunities. The biggest defensive play of the game for the Pioneers’ came on the final out for the Savage Storm when Boone ranged all the way back to the fence in deep centerfield to haul in a long fly ball of the bat of SOSU senior slugger Marjorie Johnson.

Callahan and Boone were also the most significant contributors at the plate in the win for TWU. Boone went 3-3 with a run scored, a RBI, a double, and a stolen base. Callahan had the game’s most important hit, a double to left field in the bottom of the third that knocked in two runs.

The win over SOSU lifted the Pioneers’ spirits after they suffered an 11-3 loss to East Central University in their first game of the day. Sophomore catcher Kaley Frye and junior designated player Amber Brooks did play well for the Pioneers in the defeat to the Tigers. Frye hit her second home run of the season while Brooks had two hits.

TWU finished the three-day tournament against LSC North Division teams with a 3-4 record. The Pioneers (13-30) will return to action this Wednesday, April 2, when they host an evening doubleheader (5/7 p.m.) at Pioneer Field against Texas Wesleyan University.
