PIONEERS LOSE TWO OF THREE AT CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT

TWU 4, SWOSU 2 (8 innings) - Box Score
UCO 10, TWU 2 (5 innings) - Box Score
MSU 7, TWU 2 - Box Score

DURANT, Oklahoma (March 29) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers had a difficult time on Saturday, losing two of their three games played at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament in Durant, Oklahoma.

The Pioneers began the day in promising fashion, defeating the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs 4-2 in eight innings. A strong pitching effort from sophomore Carly Case was the key to the victory for TWU. Case earned her eighth win of the season by scattering just four hits in a complete game effort. The only runs Case allowed came in the bottom of the seventh inning when SWOSU junior pitcher Brittany Strickland hit a two-run home run to tie the game and force extra innings. The Pioneers refused to fold, however, bouncing back in the top of the eighth inning to score two runs on two hits and a Bulldog error. Case then retired SWOSU in order in the home half of the eighth to end the game. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone and senior third baseman Meagan Peiser provided the majority of the offense in the contest for TWU. Boone hit a solo home run, her first of the season, in the top of the third. She also scored another run in the decisive top of the eighth. Peiser scored a run and went 2-3 at the plate (including her first triple of the year).

The Pioneers could not sustain their momentum in their second game of the day, falling 10-2 in five innings to the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos. UCO used five walks and four hits in the bottom of the third inning to break open a scoreless game by scoring eight runs. TWU tried to answer, pushing single runs across the plate in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth. UCO sophomore shortstop Kelsey Tiger thwarted the Pioneers’ hopes for a comeback by smacking an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to put the Bronchos back on top by eight runs and end the game via the run rule. Boone enjoyed another strong game offensively for TWU, collecting two hits, scoring a run, and stealing a pair of bases.

TWU dropped a 7-2 decision to the Midwestern State University Mustangs in their final game of day. The game was determined in the bottom of the second inning when MSU turned six singles (four of them infield hits) into six runs. Peiser (pictured) provided the only highlight of the night for TWU in the top of the third inning when she smacked a two-run homer (her team-high fourth of the year) in the bottom of the third. The win for the Mustangs was their fifth of the season against the Pioneers.

TWU (12-29) will wrap up the weekend tournament with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers will take on East Central University at 2:00 p.m. and then meet Southeastern Oklahoma State University at 4:00 p.m.
