PIONEERS SPLIT ON FIRST DAY OF LSC CROSSOVER TOURNAMENT
NSU 8, TWU 6 (8 innings) - Box Score
TWU 5, CU 2 - Box Score
DURANT, Oklahoma (March 28) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers split their first two games at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament on Friday afternoon in Durant, Oklahoma.
In their first game of the day, TWU was defeated 8-6 in eight innings by the Northeastern State University Riverhawks. The Pioneers held 4-2 lead late in the contest only to see the Riverhawks score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and force extra innings. NSU stayed hot in the top of the eighth, plating four more runs to jump out to an 8-4 lead. TWU would try to come back in the home half of the eighth, scoring twice and having runners on first and second with two outs. The Pioneers’ rally was thwarted, however, when NSU junior pitcher Lacee Craig forced TWU sophomore rightfielder Angie Arebalos to ground out to shortstop and end the game. Senior third baseman Kaci Berg was the offensive catalyst in the win for NSU, collecting two hits and driving in five runs. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone had a pair of hits in the loss for TWU.
TWU bounced back in their second game to defeat the Cameron University Aggies by a 5-2 score. The Pioneers started quickly, using two hits, a walk, and a wild pitch to score two runs in the bottom of the first inning and take a 2-0 lead. A Cameron error in the bottom of the third gave TWU an unearned run and extended the Pioneers’ advantage to 3-0. Cameron cut the TWU lead to 3-2 by scoring twice in the top of the fourth. Senior shortstop Rachel Johnson (pictured) then stepped up for TWU, blasting a two-run homerun, her first of the season, in the bottom of the sixth inning that sealed the win for the Pioneers. Sophomore left fielder Billie Callahan and senior third baseman Meagan Peiser also enjoyed strong games at the plate for TWU, registering two hits apiece.
TWU (11-27) will continue play in the three-day, fourteen-team tournament with games Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma State University (10:30 a.m.), the University of Central Oklahoma (12:30 p.m.), and Midwestern State University (6:30 p.m.).
